Murphy West

Murphy West is your typical ‘Nice Guys Finish Last’ sort of fellow, and he’s a little more than annoyed when he’s thrown into the rather unusual predicament of having to protect his very soul. A writer by day, an insomniac by night, his life is turned inside out once he’s been given his Life Book. With the guidance of man’s best friend, he’s hoping he can come out of this unscathed.

Mary Alice Kholer

Best friends with Murphy since high school, Mary Alice is currently going for her Masters in Veterinary Medicine and interns at a local animal hospital. Plagued by a sickness that’s ravaged her body, she’s always felt there was something major missing in her life, but is afraid there might not be time for her to figure out what it is. Baby steps into change are what she wants, but big leaps of faith is what she needs.

Dante West

Dante is Murphy’s older brother. Older not necessary meaning wiser, as Murphy likes to point out when Dante offers up his opinions. A police sergeant working in the 108th precinct of Queens County, he’s got two more responsibilities other than his brother; his girlfriend Darlene and their daughter Caroline. Dante is a blue collar type of guy, but he’s well in tune with the sibling radar and knows Murphy’s hiding something from him – it remains to be seen if he’ll let him in on the secret or not.

Darlene Anders

Dante’s girlfriend and mother to their child Caroline, she works as an RN in Mt. Sinai Hospital. When she’s not juggling her time between work and her daughter, she’s usually mothering a host of cops that congregate in her kitchen looking for her famous chocolate chip cookies. She was certainly blessed with more patience than most.

Henry Lars

Now that he’s older, Henry has plenty of sleepless nights to consider whether the hubris of his youth had anything to do with where he’s at today – a hit man and delivery boy for the mysterious Messenger. A grizzled looking fellow, he’s seen and done more than most. Bound by contract, there’s only a few more victims before retirement, but until then, he’s never more than a few steps behind Murphy’s fleeing shadow.

Messenger

Despite how he walked into Henry’s life more than twenty years ago and has been working with him ever since, Messenger is still something of a mystery. He’s judge, jury, and executioner for those that are unfortunate enough to find themselves in his presence, but still a man of few words and fewer explanations.

Elizabeth Kobalt

A woman with her own secrets and sins, she’s found and tried to cultivate the sliver of humanity left in Henry. Patiently waiting for the day when he can come home without the proverbial blood on his hands, Liz spends her days working as a bank manager and her nights lying awake and usually alone.

Rosie

Rosie is a five year old Viszla with more at stake than just being man’s best friend; she’s also his Guide. Unable to communicate through traditional means, she’s resorted to speaking with Murphy only in his dreams, giving him pieces to the puzzle in the hopes he can save his soul.

Father Thomas Sinclair

A man of God who’s also been given a life book, Father Tom has tried to counsel those that come to the church with questions and the same unusual problem in tow. He was also the only man Demetri had ever willingly spoken with regarding the Life Book and the horrors that surround it.

Demetri Walker

Demetri is a troubled soul. Committed to the insane asylum for his foreseeable future, he’s reluctant to explain much about what’s happened to him.
